How much does this remind you of our own culture? ;)

Urban Legends...

... that caused a moral panic!

Oh I love this stuff. I've learnt about most of this stuff and I'm fascinated by them but thankfully I didn't believe in some. And even if I did, over the years, I've learnt about spams and take these stuff with grains of salt.

Anyway, here's an excerpt:

The hypothetical attacks involved injecting blood tainted with AIDS into unsuspecting targets, at movie theaters, raves, and night clubs. The unwary victim would feel a slight prick on their arm, and later discover a note attached to their clothes carrying the message ‘Welcome to the world of AIDS.’ Variations of the urban legend quickly spread through email, and some claimed to be a warning being circulated by the Dallas Police Department, which later declared the attacks as false, and not happening.
 Cool stuff. More via ListVerse.

It's better to know the truth, right? ;)

There are more urban legends/myths out there. Check out Snopes.
(So next time you receive an email/"news" that a tsunami is about to happen, know that even geologists/scientists can't predict what will happen in a few months time until moments before the actual incident.

Cop Out 2010

There's a new movie coming... and judging by the first few seconds of the trailer, I thought it was going to be an action cop movie because it was Bruce frickin' Willis! Then I saw Tracy Morgan and thought "It's a comedy!" and Seann William Scott's is in it too! Yeay!

Watch the trailer.

You can watch a HD trailer here.

Directed by Kevin Smith and the plot:
Two veteran cops (Willis and Morgan) are tracking down a stolen vintage baseball card. On the chase, they rescue Gabriela (Ana de la Reguera), dealing with gangsters and their money laundering.
A baseball card? Seriously?

Release date: 26 February 2010.

Cougar Town

When someone asks me what I watch (TV show) I start to recall them alphabetically. As if I can remember them all.

Since most of the shows are on winter break right now, I've decided I'd watch new ones just to pass the time. I've read somewhere about Cougar Town and it's Courteney Cox Arquette! And now I'm loving it! It's up there with Grey's for me!

I miss Courteney. Didn't love her so much in Dirt (which I only watched a few episodes for).

It's about a 40-year old recently divorcee, Jules, who's reentering the dating world (with younger men) while she takes care of her 17-year old son, Travis. She has her best friend/neighbour, Ellie, who helps her get through her life. She has another close friend/employee, Laurie, who's much younger and helping her regarding what-young-people-do-to-have-fun stuff.

Sometimes, well, almost all the time her ex-husband, Bobby, pops in and have breakfast/get his things sometimes annoying/helping Jules. She also has this handsome hunky neighbour, Grayson, who dislikes her, but they have cute bantering sessions. Maybe sometime, they would hook up? But Grayson is also a recently divorced and likes much much younger women.

The show was created by Kevin Biegel and Bill Lawrence (from Scrubs! I love Scrubs! And no wonder his wife is in the show as well!)

Courteney Cox as Jules Cobb. She lives in a small town in Florida and is a successful real estate agent.

Christa Miller who plays Ellie Torres, the next door neighbour/best friend. She's married to Andy and have a son named Stan. She is sarcastic, unapologetic person who, most of the time, disagrees with Jules's other friend, Laurie. The actress is Bill Lawrie's wife. She suits the role perfectly as I remember her portraying Jordan (Scrubs), who's also bitchy.

Busy Philipps plays Laurie Keller, the other best friend and the employee.
We may have seen her in He's Just Not That Into You, Made of Honor and White Chicks.

Brian Van Holt plays Bobby Cobb, Jules' unemployed ex-husband who currently lives in a boat - on land!

Dan Byrd plays Travis Cobb, Jules' 17-year old son. He has a healthy, understanding relationship with both of his parents though they constantly embarass him due to the flirting and driving around town on a golf cart.

We may have seen him in Heroes Season 4 and A Cinderelle Story.

Yeah, I know. I just have to use this topless picture.

Josh Hopkins plays Grayson Ellis, Jules' neighbour and a bartender. He enjoys dating younger women and rubbing it in Jules' face. But sometimes, he shows his good side.
We may remember him from Private Practice Season 2 as Dr Noah Barnes (Addie's married love interest).

I've only watched up to Episode 8 though. Where's the time?

Will update more.

I try.

Sherlock Holmes 2009

After 6 months of absence from the cinema, first caused by the H1N1 situation, we finally went to the movies yesterday morning. Watched the 10.45 am show at Qlap Cineplex, got the best seats at the last row, not too crowdy, good popcorn and great company.

I've never read any Holmes novels so I wasn't sure if I would like it. We loved it.

Director: Guy Ritchie
Sherlock Holmes: Robert Downey Jr.
Dr. Watson: Jude Law

These two big actors were the ticket seller for me actually ;)

Basically, big mystery solved but opening up a bigger mystery which tells you there's a sequel~ Looking forward to it actually. I love it that some parts of the movie where Holmes is thinking, they put on some music that reminds me too much of Jack Sparrow.

Since we watch House, we knew that House & Wilson's characters were somewhat inspired by Holmes & Watson. Half of the time, couldn't stop thinking about them actually.

Ok, here's some fun facts!

  • Robert Downey Jr was visiting the producer's office when he learnt about the project. Ritchie felt Downey was too old for the role because he wanted the film to show a younger Holmes on a learning curve like Batman Begins. Ritchie decided to take a chance! (Works for us!)
  • Ritchie originally envisioned Russell Crowe in the role. (Thankful that did not happen!)
  • Soundtrack by Hans Zimmer (not surprising~)
  • Downey has been nominated for the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards for the category Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.
My score: 4/5

Ciao.

Top tech trends in 2009

Smartphones. Apps. Facebook! I agree with this list. I'm guilty of using most of them.

Facebook now has more than 350 million users -- that's more people than live in the United States and is more than double the 150 million people who were on Facebook at the start of the year. Half of Facebook users log on to the site at least once on any given day; the average Facebook user spends nearly an hour a day on the site.

King William's College Quiz

Up until 1999, pupils at King William’s College would sit the paper unseen on the last day of term before the Christmas holidays.  The questions are very hard and often cryptic, and pupils got hardly any questions right first time: five percent was considered a good score! During the Christmas holidays, pupils tried to find the answers to the harder questions by consulting reference books or asking clever relatives. When they returned to school in the New Year, they took the test again, under exam conditions and without the aid of notes.
Say what?

These are some of the questions for 2009:
---
12. Which Queen of England or Great Britain:
---
1 battled for Lancaster?
2 was the first to be kissed by Pepys?
3 was the consort of two Kings of England?
4 made a posthumous journey to London leaving her viscera at Lincoln?
5 numbered two archbishops and one bishop among her maternal uncles?
6 on first meeting her future spouse had prompted him to order a glass of brandy?
7 escaped in a hurry from a Cambridge Hall, before it was burned down?
8 died following surgery for an umbilical hernia?
9 regretted the jettisoning of this for that?
10 corresponded with Mrs Freeman?

*gulp* (Search engines help!)

Tech: Contact lenses alerting glucose levels

Diabetics may soon be able to wear contact lenses that continuously alert them to variations in their glucose levels by changing colours - replacing the need to routinely draw blood throughout the day.
Cool! I mean, it'd help diabetics a lot rather than having their blood drawn regularly. Others would be able to help them too.

Climate control for your desks

I would have appreciated this at my previous job. Some days, I wish I had got gloves on. On some, I wore 3 layers of clothing. Seriously, and we live in the equator.

"Personalised ventilation means less air needs to be cooled and pumped through a building because air needs only to be blown at desks, and not throughout entire rooms. Individual vents can also switch off automatically when a desk is vacant. The result is that a room’s temperature can increase while keeping people comfortable at work."
